Cultivating Peace: Literature as Work for Justice- Dr. Sawsan Malla Hussein
On Monday, March 24th, 2025, the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences at Abdelmalek Essaâdi University hosted a thought-provoking seminar titled “Cultivating Peace: Literature as Work for Justice.” The session was conducted by Dr. Sawsan Malla Hussein, Professor of Humanities at Abdelmalek Essaâdi University, and organized by the Linguistic, Literary, Cultural & Interdisciplinary Studies Research Lab as part of its ongoing doctoral training program.
Dr. Malla Hussein’s seminar examined the moral and transformative role of literature in promoting justice and peace. She emphasized how literary texts can function as ethical spaces where social wounds are narrated, contested, and healed. Drawing from examples across genres and traditions, the discussion explored how literature engages with violence, reconciliation, and collective memory, fostering empathy and critical consciousness.
The session inspired doctoral candidates to consider how their own research could contribute to building just and peaceful societies through the humanities, reinforcing the Lab’s mission to bridge scholarly inquiry with ethical and civic engagement.
