LLCIS Lab Student Presentation at International Conference on Border Thinking at Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Saiss, Fes
LLCIS Lab is pleased to highlight the participation of Chakib Amghar in the international conference “Border Thinking from the Maghreb: Who Speaks for the Human in a Change of Epoch?” held on November 13, 2025, at Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Saiss, Fes.
Chakib Amghar presented a paper titled “Between the Maghreb and the Mashreq: Abdellatif Laâbi’s Translations of Palestinian Poetry and Speaking for the Postcolonial Human.” The presentation examined Laâbi’s translations of Palestinian poetry published in Souffles–Anfas (1966–1972), analyzing how his translation practice enacted what Abdelkébir Khatibi conceptualized as “double critique” alongside Walter Mignolo’s notion of “border thinking.”
The analysis demonstrated how Laâbi’s translations forged transcolonial solidarities between the Maghreb and the Mashreq, particularly in the aftermath of the 1967 Naksa, by challenging both Western epistemological dominance and rigid nationalist frameworks. Focusing on Samih al-Qassim’s poem “Le 5 juin,” the presentation highlighted how Palestinian poetry was positioned as both a concrete political reality and a broader metaphor for Global South resistance.
LLCIS Lab commends Chakib Amghar for this contribution to international scholarly discussions on postcolonial thought, translation, and transcolonial solidarity.
