A Talk by Dr. Diana Wylie and Scholar Karim Benzakour: Urban History – A Challenge!
On November 3, 2025, the Linguistic, Literary, Cultural & Interdisciplinary Studies Research Lab (LLCIS) organized a thought-provoking talk titled “Urban History: A Challenge!” featuring Dr. Diana Wylie and Scholar Karim Benzakour. The event took place at the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences, Tetouan.
The session brought together two insightful perspectives on the complexities of studying urban history. Dr. Wylie discussed the methodological and interpretive challenges historians face when reconstructing urban narratives, illustrating her ideas with the example of her own city, Boston, and its layered historical development. Karim Benzakour, in turn, reflected on the history of Tangier, shedding light on forgotten stories that deserve to be revisited and recovered.
The discussion inspired attendees to rethink the city as both an archive and a living organism — one that continuously negotiates between past and present.
The Lab reaffirms its commitment to fostering such enriching interdisciplinary exchanges that bring history closer to contemporary understanding.
